Retrospective of Roman Mikhailov’s films: A Journey Through Magic and Reality

Roman Mikhailov is one of the most striking and original contemporary Russian directors and playwrights, creating unique cinematic worlds where fairy tales intertwine with reality. A world-famous scientist who left his academic career for art, Mikhailov won the Andrei Bely Prize for Literature and prestigious theater and cinema awards, including the Grand Prix of the Spirit of Fire, Gorky Fest, and LenDok festivals. Andrei Moguchy’s play The Tale of the Last Angel, based on Roman’s text, won the Golden Mask award.

Mikhailov’s films are metaphysical parables and philosophical reflections on modernity, filled with tenderness and magic. His debut film, A Tale for the Old, won the main prize at the Spirit of Fire festival, and his subsequent works cemented his status as an innovator who opens up new facets of Russian cinema to viewers.

The retrospective will feature the director’s key films:
– Let’s Go to Macau with You (2023) – participant of the Winter festival, and the Volna festival prize.
– Snow, Sister, and Wolverine (2023) – winner of the Dialogues in Cinema award.
– Vacation in October and Heritage (2023) – participants of leading Russian film forums.
– We Need to Make Films About Love (2024) – awarded prizes at the Moscow International Film Festival and the East-West festival.

Mikhailov’s world is a space where fantasy and reality intertwine into captivating visual and semantic images. His films invite viewers to reflect on love, time, and the deep truths of the human soul.

The films are presented by producer Yulia Vityazyeva and film critic Boris Nelepo.
