Francisco Goya: monarchs, majas, torments

New lecture from the art critic Andrei Sakov on the Spanish painter and graphic artist, one of the first and most prominent artists of the Romantic era, Francisco Goya.

“I don’t want to talk about clichés about the “Spanish genius” and the “founder of modern art.” About the “gloomy court artist” and the deafness that sharpened all the nerves. About intrigue, gossip, betrayal, escape. And I don’t want to talk about wars and executions either.
